- Infections
Untreated sexually transmitted infections such as genital tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, or chlamydia can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). PID causes:
- Severe scarring
- Damage to the cilia (tiny hair-like structures inside the tubes)
- Chronic pelvic or abdominal pain
If left untreated, these infections can also lead to long-term complications like liver disease or certain cancers.
- Hydrosalpinx
Hydrosalpinx occurs when the fallopian tubes are severely blocked and filled with toxic fluid. This:
- Reduces chances of natural pregnancy
- Affects IVF outcomes because the toxic fluid can flow back into the uterus
Specialists at our Marchela centre often recommend removal or surgical blockage of the affected tube before IVF to improve success rates.
- Endometriosis
Endometriosis occurs when the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside it. This condition can:
- Form scar tissue
- Block fallopian tubes
- Affect the position of reproductive organs
- Cause painful periods, pelvic pain, and painful intercourse
Some women may have no symptoms at all, despite severe endometriosis.
- Tubal Ligation
This permanent birth-control surgical procedure involves cutting or sealing the fallopian tubes. Women who undergo this procedure cannot conceive naturally unless they undergo reversal or IVF.
