Cryopreservation

What is Cryopreservation?

Cryopreservation is an advanced medical technique used to preserve sperm, eggs, embryos, and other reproductive tissues by cooling them to extremely low temperatures. At Kiran Infertility Center, Marichela, we offer state-of-the-art cryopreservation services as part of our comprehensive fertility care.

Reproductive cells and tissues are stored in liquid nitrogen at –196°C, ensuring they remain protected, intact, and genetically stable for future use. This method helps individuals and couples safeguard their fertility, allowing them to plan a pregnancy at a later stage of life.

Why Cryopreservation is Important

  • Fertility Preservation:
Individuals can freeze sperm, eggs, or embryos at a younger age to maintain better reproductive potential in the future.
  • Medical Necessity:
Patients undergoing treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, or surgeries that may affect fertility can preserve their reproductive cells beforehand.
  • Flexibility During ART Treatments:
Couples undergoing IVF can store remaining embryos for later cycles, reducing the need to repeat the entire procedure.

At ultra-low temperatures, biological activity stops completely. Cryoprotectant solutions are used to prevent ice crystal formation, ensuring the cells remain unharmed throughout the freezing process.

Types of Cryopreservation

1. Sperm Freezing

Sperm samples are frozen and stored for use in future IVF or IUI cycles. This is especially helpful for men with declining sperm quality, medical conditions, or those planning to undergo treatments that may affect fertility.

2. Oocyte (Egg) Freezing

Egg freezing is a reliable option for women who may face fertility-affecting treatments or wish to preserve their eggs for future family planning. This allows women to store unfertilized eggs instead of embryos, giving them full reproductive autonomy.

3. Embryo Freezing

Embryos created during an IVF cycle can be safely frozen for future use. This offers multiple advantages:

  • Another chance at pregnancy if the initial cycle doesn’t succeed
  • The option to plan pregnancy later, even as natural fertility decreases
  • Embryo transfer at a time when the body is more prepared, such as during a natural menstrual cycle

How the Cryopreservation Process Works

  1. Screening:
Patients undergo infectious disease testing (HIV, hepatitis, etc.), and the reproductive material is evaluated for quality.
  2. Preparation:
Cryoprotectants are mixed with the sample to protect cells from damage during the freezing process.
  3. Freezing Methods:
    • Slow Freezing: Gradual cooling before storage in liquid nitrogen
    • Vitrification (Rapid Freezing): Ultra-fast cooling that prevents ice crystal formation and enhances survival rates

Key Benefits

    • Helps preserve reproductive potential for future family planning
    • Protects fertility for patients undergoing medical treatments
    • Allows couples to attempt pregnancy later without repeating a full IVF cycle
